A graphic zooming in on the overlap region between the solar and earth emitted blackbody radiance curves and highlighting the spectral coverage of the GOES 3.9 micron channel A graphic showing the overlap region near 3.9 microns between the solar and earth emitted blackbody radiance curves

The spectral region covered by the 3.9 micron channel also includes reflected solar radiation. The graph on the left shows both solar- and earth-emitted Planck radiation curves. Notice that there is an overlap of the two curves in the region covered by the 3.9 micron channel.
