Cirrus Clouds Viewed with the 6.7 Micron Channel

This image shows cirrus clouds viewed with the GOES-8 6.7 micron water vapor channel

• Low brightness temperature
• Movement of image brightness gradients reveals motion of air masses and transitions of circulation features
• Possible brightness temperature contributions from underlying water vapor for thin cirrus
• Brightness temperature of thin cirrus normally colder than for longwave infrared window
• Very good signal to noise; brightness temperature for thick cirrus indicative of cloud height
