Welcome to the Website for
Feature Identification Exercises: Clouds, Snow, and Ice Using MODIS.
This module demonstrates the daytime use of multispectral MODIS imagery
for the identification of clouds over snow and ice cover through four
miniexercises covering four geographical regions. Each exercise is designed
to provide the learner with opportunities to explore and practic technoques
that draw on relatively new multispectral imaging capabilities available
with NOAA -16, -17, and the EOS polar satellites Terra and Aqua. On the
EOS satellites, the MODIS 36-channel imager offers many new and exciting
observing capabilities for land, ocean and atmosphere. Similar capabilities
will become available with NPOESS and METOP satellites in the future.
How to Begin:
To start the module, click the Main Menu Button. Channel selection and
feature identification case-example exercises are presented at each of
the locations listed on the menu.

Using the Module:
Each case example begins with images of the area in question using visible,
shortwave infrared (1.6-micrometer), short-wave infrared (3.9-micrometer),
and infrared window (11-micrometer) channels. Use these images to help
answer questions on channel selection and feature identification. Answers
with explanations and imagery (where appropriate) follow each question.
