Feature Identification Using
Environmental Satellites


This Webcast presents feature identification examples using a combination of high-resolution multi-spectral polar and geostationary satellite imagery products. Tom Lee of the Naval Research Laboratory narrates five short sections that focus on a set of particularly challenging feature identification problems. Examples are included from Asia, Europe, Antarctica, and North America. A table summarizes suggested detection strategies for each phenomenon type based on available polar and geostationary capabilities and whether the event occurs during daytime or nighttime.
How to Begin

To begin, click the link at the bottom of this page. You will go to a set of two tables showing which channels can be used to detect the features and/or atmospheric conditions listed at the top of the table. By passing over the features, a short description of the relevant case example will appear along with highlights of the channels that are used in the examples. The legend in the upper right-hand corner explains the meaning of the symbols in the table. To access the case examples, select a menu item from the menu bar along the left side of the screen. (If no items appear on the menu bar, close this window and start the module again. The menu selections will appear.) When you do so, sub-menus and/or a page box may appear below the menu items if there is more than one page under that menu item. Click the Page buttons to display the individual pages of a section. If this is your first visit to this page, please wait until this page downloads fully before continuing. This will ensure that the menu bar functions properly. Use the POES logo at the top of the menu bar to return to this module's home page.

Pages Feature

Clicking the Pages button above the page number box (if present) will display all of the page titles in the current section. Use the Pages button to quickly go to a particular page within a section.

Imagery Navigation

Colored boxes are superimposed on some of the larger images to help orient users and locate features that were mentioned in the audio and text.

Image Control Buttons

The High Resolution button, , displays an image's full resolution available in this Webcast. The Thumbnail button, , shows a small version of the graphic to help navigate the high resolution graphic. The Hint button, , when active, provides more information about the current case example. The Link button, , when active, launches a separate window with links to other polar satellite training relevant to the current case example.

Note: In high-resolution mode when more than one image is available, a fade button, , allows you to fade from one image to another. This enables you to compare specific features across the two images. Scroll bars allow you to move the image in the window.

This site uses frames!

Because this site uses frames, avoid using the Back and Forward functions of your browser. You should only use the menu bar or links embedded in the menu bar on the left of the page to navigate between pages and sections.

Cache Settings

It is strongly suggested that you empty your cache and set the cache size to at least 40 MB or more before starting this module. Important Information for Viewing this Module


Resolution

The optimal screen resolution setting for this module is 800 x 600. Using a higher screen resolution is also an option.

Colors

Graphics were designed for a minimum of 16-bit color. This module will not look as intended when running in 256-color mode.
