This image shows a high-resolution sector taken from the POES pass on the previous page. The sector is centered just west of Kodiak Island. The Cook Inlet is north of Kodiak Island with Anchorage located at the northeast end of the inlet. Note the detail in the snow cover over the mountains and the cloud features over the southern half of the sector.

Use the Product Listbox to view the IR (Ch 4, 11-µm) image and observe the corresponding features as they appear in the infrared channel. Note the similarity in the patterns over the mountainous terrain. There are many more details apparent in the cloud cover, such as the cold (bright) cirrus streak extending east-west across the middle of the image. The low clouds can be discerned in this image as darker gray areas near the coast with the colder high clouds in the brighter white shades to the south. By adding color or additional black-and-white enhancements to the lookup table, even more detail can be seen in the cloud cover in the IR channel.
