Moving westward, Georges lost some strength before hitting the Lesser Antilles as a Category Two storm. Hurricane Georges then made landfall over the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the northern coast of Cuba. The mountains of Hispañola impacted Georges the most, weakening it to a Category One storm.

As Georges passed over the warm waters of the Florida Straits and approached the Florida Keys, it strengthened again to a Category Two storm.
