From 21 to 30 September 1998, Hurricane Georges left a trail of destruction in the Caribbean region and across the southern U.S. Gulf coast. Estimates indicate that 602 people were killed, 1 in the U.S., as the storm pushed its way across the islands of the Caribbean.
