Cloud amount defines the percentage of the High-Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) field-of-view (FOV) obscured by cloud and is derived using the carbon dioxide slicing method. The cloud amount percentage does not indicate the absolute cloud amount. For example, a FOV that is completely obscured by thin cirrus has the same cloud amount as a FOV completely obscured by a thick stratus or stratocumulus.
