A POES sounding was retrieved for this location despite the cloudy conditions using AMSU microwave sounder observations. We notice that details in the POES sounding when compared to the nearby Quillayute RAOB appear noticeably smoothed. Recall that in the presence of clouds POES sounding retrieval cannot benefit from the higher resolution information of the HIRS infrared sounder channels since clouds hinder or even prevent infrared sounding below cloud level. A GOES sounding was not retrieved for this location due to the overcast conditions.
