GOES satellites are deployed with a 19-channel sounder that measures infrared radiation similar to HIRS . The sounder also incorporates one visible channel used for cloud detection. These sensors provide a combined surface, atmospheric temperature, atmospheric moisture, and cloud measuring capability.
