Cumulus Clouds Viewed with the 3.9 Micron Channel during Daytime

This image shows cumulus clouds viewed with the GOES-8 3.9 micron shortwave infrared channel during daytime

• High reflectance (warm) during day due to water cloud
• Tops darken (cool) considerably (poor reflection) when enter ice phase
• Moderate emissivity day and night
• Image animation useful in distinguishing clouds from sub-pixel fires
