Cumulus Clouds Viewed with the 3.9 Micron Channel during Nighttime

This image shows cumulus clouds viewed with the GOES-8 3.9 micron shortwave infrared channel during nighttime

• Moderate emissivity day and night
• Animation useful in distinguishing clouds from sub-pixel fires and urban heat islands
• Large cumulus clouds appear much noisier than in the 10.7 micron channel as cloud tops get colder
• Small cumulus clouds appear warmer due to sub-pixel effect
