Stratus Clouds Viewed with the 10.7 Micron Channel

This image shows stratus cloud viewed with the GOES-8 10.7 micron longwave infrared window channel

• Brightness temperature indicates cloud top temperature
• Best seen as water cloud using fog product (night)
• Identify potential for supercooled clouds day (with 3.9 reflection) or night (with fog product)
• Low stratus movement depends on synoptic situation
• Cloud motion may be useful in discriminating stratus from fog
