Stratus Clouds Viewed with the 13.3 Micron Channel

This image shows stratus clouds viewed with the GOES-12 13.3 micron carbon dioxide channel This image shows stratus clouds viewed with the GOES-12 10.7 micron longwave infrared channel

• Low stratiform cloud difficult to discriminate due to significant bightness temperature contribution from CO2 emission
• Cirrostratus and deep altostratus are easier to detect due to smaller CO2 contribution in upper toposphere
• Brightness temperature change relative to longwave infrared window useful for determining cloud-top pressure
