In regions of varying surface emissivity for the 3.9 micron channel, the fog product may be compromised. In this image, notice that much of extreme western Texas appears to be covered with fog. However, this area, known as the Caprock Escarpment, is almost 1,000 feet higher than the area to its east. Since most low-level moisture entering this region has its source to the southeast, it is highly unlikely that the Caprock would be covered with fog while the area to its east and south would be clear. This false signal occurs because the emissivity of the Caprock soil is less than 1. Obviously there are times when the Caprock is covered with fog and stratus, however, in those situations a much larger area of west Texas will be cloudy and other information such as animation of the scene, continuity of the cloud deck, and surface observations can be used to validate the fog product.
