Shortwave IR Window Channel (3.9 micron)

Reflective Properties: Identifying Clouds and Snow in the 3.9 and 10.7 Micron Channels and the Reflected Energy Product (Page 6 of 8)

A four panel composite of GOES-8 visible, 3.9 micron, 10.7 micron, and reflected energy product images demonstrating the identification of snow cover

In this four-panel image, notice that clouds are not easily separated from snow when only the visible channel is used.

However, with the addition of information from the 3.9 and 10.7 micron channels, as well as the 3.9 reflectivity product, snow cover may be separated from areas of clear ground, ice cloud, and water cloud.
