This animation shows a GOES-8 visible channel imagery loop with darker brightness counts enhanced for a thunderstorm. This animation shows a GOES-8 visible channel imagery loop with a standard grayscale enhancement applied to a thunderstorm.

In this region with rather uniform surface brightness, only minor detail is seen when the dark end is enhanced. However, the shadows from some clouds are apparent. Notice in this image late in the day, that shadows from cumulus are closer to the obstructing cloud than shadows from higher cirrus clouds.
