GOES Visible and AVHRR 1 and 2 Channel Comparison (Page 2 of 18)

Return to the previous menu.

This graphic depicts the spectral responses for the GOES and AVHRR visible channels within the solar spectrum.

In this example, a GOES-8 visible image is compared to the NOAA AVHRR channels 1 and 2. Notice the slight differences in wavelengths.

The GOES-8 visible image and the AVHRR channel 1 image are similar in brightness, while the AVHRR channel 2 image looks different.

This channel (AVHRR 2) is centered at a longer wavelength where there is more reflection from vegetation and less from water. Vegetation in this channel appears bright while water appears dark.

Notice the difference in the brightness of water in the northern Chesapeake, which indicates suspended sediments.
