An animating graphic depicting terrestrial radiation as it interacts with the atmospheric water vapor and clouds in the 6.7 micron infrared water vapor absorption region Graph of the water vapor weighting function at 6.7 microns

The graph on the right shows a weighting function for the water vapor channel in a standard atmosphere. Most of the energy that the satellite detects in this channel originates from a layer that extends from 500 to 200 millibars. The brightness temperature that is sensed can be thought of as a weighted mean value over this pressure range.
